Our Story
Betty and Vi’s is inspired by Chef Perry’s great-grandmothers, whose culinary talents shaped his passion for cooking.
Betty PK Rogers, born in Chatham County, North Carolina, moved to Virginia Beach in her early 20s and built a reputation as a sought-after caterer. For over 30 years, she cooked for some of the wealthiest in the area, including a Budweiser owner.
Viola, whose real name was Mary but lovingly called "Vi" by her husband, Rev. Paul Brown, was born in Hume, Virginia. She took over as the family cook for the Claggett family, who were known for hosting lavish gatherings. Her food was the highlight of every event, leading the Claggett family to help publish her cookbook, Viola’s Favorite Recipes. Unfortunately, they hold the rights, and her family receives no compensation from its sales.
Viola passed away in 2022 at the age of 110, but Chef Perry is preserving her legacy by recreating her recipes. Many of the published versions were incomplete, as she never revealed all her secrets. Having grown up at their feet in the kitchen, watching, listening, and learning, Chef Perry’s food is a tribute to their expertise and traditions. His culinary journey also includes training under Chef Renée, further enriching his craft.
